Morocco’s King Sends a Strong Message to Government Over Youth Unemployment

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has called on the government and public institutions to make youth issues a central priority, stressing the need for better education, skills development and economic opportunities for young people.

The king made the call on Friday, October 9, 2026, while addressing Parliament in Rabat at the opening of a new legislative session. His remarks come months after youth-led protests highlighted frustration over employment opportunities, public healthcare and the quality of education.

King Mohammed VI urged authorities to develop a comprehensive approach to youth policy that guarantees equal opportunities and improves young people’s access to education, vocational training and employment.

He said youth-related concerns should be placed at the forefront of public policies and the work of government institutions.

The king also emphasised the importance of restoring young people’s confidence in their future, their country’s institutions and their opportunities for social advancement.

His remarks place youth inclusion among Morocco’s wider economic and social development priorities, with a focus on helping young people gain the skills and opportunities needed to participate in the economy.

Employment remains a significant challenge for young people in Morocco. Frustration over job prospects and public services has contributed to youth-led demonstrations in recent months.

Protesters have called for improvements in healthcare, education and job creation, highlighting concerns about whether economic development is delivering sufficient opportunities for younger generations.

The king called for a new generation of economic strategies and greater private-sector investment, with businesses encouraged to expand their capacity to create jobs, invest and export.

Beyond youth policy, the royal address highlighted priorities including water and energy security, food supplies, industrial development, digital technology and artificial intelligence.

King Mohammed VI also urged authorities to address delays in transferring powers and resources to regional institutions. He said local authorities needed the capacity to identify regional challenges and deliver practical solutions.

The broader agenda seeks to balance economic growth with social inclusion and more equitable development across Morocco’s regions.

Implementation Will Be Key

The king’s remarks set out priorities for the new parliamentary term, but their impact will depend on how they are translated into policies and measurable results.

Opposition lawmakers said they would be watching to see whether the government turns the stated objectives into concrete action.

For Morocco’s young people, progress will ultimately be measured by whether the country can expand access to quality education, improve public services and create meaningful employment opportunities.
